Excel Date in Number Format

Often we desire to see a date in excel cell but we get an number instead of it. Then we go to format cell and change format to Date type. These numbers often irritates us and everybody think that excel screwed up with this thing. Well nothing stupid comes from Microsoft and specially when it comes to Excel.

These numbers are nothing from number of days from date 01-Jan-1900. If you format 01-Jan-1900 to number format then cell value will be 1. Yes it starts from 01-Jan-1900.

If you enter date 30-Nov-2013 and convert it to number format then output will be 41608. This means 30th Nov 2013 is 41608 days after 01-Jan-1900.

We perform many excel calculations on dates to find other dates. It is performed on this number. For example if when one subtracts 3 from 30-Nov-2013 we get output as 27-Nov-2013. This calculation is nothing but 41608-3 = 41605.  If one converts 41605 to date format then output will be 27-Nov-2013.

This is not so great to know for using excel in optimal way but I hope you liked this fact. If you find this useful then please share our post on social sites.
